Life is training, training is life. These are the words of Aikido master Ethan Brack - a man who is full of wisdom and love. But if provoked, he will peacefully kick your ass.
Ethan, could you explain to me what Aikido is all about?
EB: Aikido is a Japanese martial art. It's descended from a samurai finishing art, meaning if we were to fight and I broke my sword, I would have to kill you with my bare hands.
Uh...so you kick a lot of ass?
EB: Well no, we transform aggression into more peaceful ways of dealing with it.
So how does Aikido differ from, say, Kung-Fu?
EB: It's a real dynamic martial art. There are a lot of circular movements that involve throws. If you don't throw somone, get thrown or fall, it's going to hurt. You want to
end the conflict with as little violence as possible.
So you have a tournament this weekend. How do you fight in an Aikido competition?
EB: It's scored along the lines of a Judo match. You get points for throws, take downs and whenever your opponent gives up.
Are there strict rules? If I was competing could I just sucker-punch somebody?
EB: Ideally you could, but we learn how to deal with the punch being thrown at us, rather than throwing the punch.
Is it true that you are always in the defense mode?
EB: Yeah. You always have to be on your toes. Life is training, training is life.
So you're jumpy.
EB: It's not jumpy, it's being prepared.
What's the deal with Ivor?
EB: Ivor is third Q, which is a rank above me. He's just ridiculous.
How is he ridiculous?
EB: Um, you really have to know him to understand him. He's just a really intense individual in his martial arts.
Ethan, if I attacked you right now, would you fight back?
EB: I'd definitely kick your ass, but you'd still be alive and I guess we could still be friends too.
Love, peace and chicken grease man.
