Let’s Dance

Oberlin faculty, staff, students, and friends took to the wooden floor in Wilder Main to do the queer milonga during the International Queer Tango Festival. Daniel Binelli, an internationally distinguished master of the bandoneón, and pianist Polly Ferman provided music.

The dance was the closing event of a semester-long collaboration between Oberlin Professor of Dance Ann Cooper Albright’s Queer Acts class and Professor of Hispanic studies Ana Cara’s Tango: The Politics and Poetics of a National Icon. In addition to coursework, participants took part in two queer tango workshops. Related events include a photography exhibition of Claudia Marciano’s acclaimed tango images in the Main Library, and a concert featuring renowned tango artists. The tango festival is part of the Year of the Queer, an interdisciplinary series of academic courses, speakers, performances, and social events to provide a forum for conversation about queer life today.
