Dean candidates to visit

Asst. dean applicants will meet with students

by Sara Foss

Two candidates for the Assistant Dean of Student Life and Services position will visit campus next week.

Shilpa Davè, from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, will meet with students in an open forum on April 6 from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Wilder 115.

James King On-To, from California State, will meet with students on April 8 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Wilder 115.

Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Gloria White, co-chair of the search committee, said the committee is impressed with the credentials and experience both candidates bring.

The committee is specifically looking for candidates who would be able to represent the Asian-American community, and both candidates have "extensive experience," White said, with Asian-Americans.

Davè serves as an academic adviser for undergraduate English majors at the University of Michigan, where she is working toward her Ph.D. She was an English language and literature major with a focus in Asian-American literature.

King On-To is the director of Cal State Fullerton's federally funded student support services for first generation and low-income students. White said Cal State Fullerton's support service program is similar to Oberlin's.

White said the committee hopes to make their decision by the end of next week. She also said that the committee may or may not bring a third candidate to campus. Junior Sophia Bae, a member of the search committee, said bringing a third candidate to campus would occur only if the first two candidates are unsatisfactory.

"We're certainly excited about two outstanding candidates," White said. The committee will have lunch with Dave and On-To Saturday.
