Committee to oversee revising, updating rules and regulations

Associate Dean of Student Life Bill Stackman is forming a committee to oversee the restructuring of the Rules and Regulations. Stackman is beginning the project that Dean of Student Life and Service Charlene Cole-Newkirk has been talking about ever since her arrival two years ago.

According to Stackman he is still creating the committee that will look into revising and updating the rules. Stackman said the process will take 18 months so he needs to find students able to commit to being on campus for that long.

"I want to make sure it's done right," Stackman said. He said he wants to run many forums and focus groups to get student and community opinion on the changes.

Stackman said the process has to start with a discussion of the philosophy behind the rules. "What is our end goal?" Stackman asked. "We don't need rules just for the sake of rules."

His committee will have a lot of work according to Stackman. "As I, someone new, trying to find something in the rules, I have had a lot of difficulty." He said there were a lot of contradictions and need for classifications.

Injunction decision nears fro Holtzman

February 21 is the last day lawyers Kirk Perry and Michael Franz can give Judge Solomon Oliver, Jr. additional materials to look over before Oliver makes a decision in Assistant Professor of Neuroscience David Holtzman's request for a preliminary injunction.

Perry represents Holtzman and Franz represents the College.

A preliminary injunction would enable Holtzman to resume teaching duties. His courseload for the semester was cancelled after complaints of inappropriate sexual conversation, inappropriate physical misconduct and drug use filed by students and staff members resulted in Holtzman's placement on paid leave after review by the College Faculty Council and General Faculty Council.

The hearings concluded on Feb. 12 with testimony from President Nancy Dye and Neuroscience Program Director Catherine McCormick. Oliver also heard testimony from Dye and dean of collee of Arts and Sciences Clayton Koppes on Oct. 31. He also heard testimony from Holtzman and Professor of Biology Richard Levin, Holtzman's adviser, on Dec. 13.
