Stackhouse and Bevacqua Live Up to Expectations

By Ian Haynes

Sophomore Courtney Stackhouse, last year’s North Coast Athletic Conference indoor sprinter of the year, maintained her championship status as she legged out victories in the 55m and the 200m last Friday at Oberlin’s first home meet.

The contest was a six-way non-scoring meet featuring runners from Oberlin, Otterbein College, Muskingum College, John Carroll University, Case Western Reserve University and Cuyahoga Community College.
As a team, the Yeorunners fared well, especially since it was, for most of them, their first week back. Stackhouse paced the team, winning the 55m with a time of 7.49 and the 200m with a time of 26.76. Finishing third in the 200m for Oberlin was senior Liz Chandler with a time of 27.39.

In the 55m hurdles, junior Apryl Wynn took third place with a time of 9.03 followed by first-year teammate Shannon Houlihan with a time of 9.19.
Sophomore Vicki Alla placed third in the 500m with a time of 1:27. She was the only runner to run middle distance for Oberlin in the meet.

The Yeowomen had a pair of distance runners place in the 3,000m. Sophomore Laura Feeney finished second with a time of 11:20 and sophomore Kyle McKenzie took third with a time of 11:28.

In the field events, newcomers and seasoned veterans alike competed well for the Yeowomen. Chandler, who has been a 12-time All NCAC athlete throughout her career and was number three in the conference in long jump last year, won the long jump with a leap of 16’10 3/4”.

Wynn, the 2000 NCAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, took third with a jump of 16’3 1/2,” followed by Houlihan with a jump of 15’7 1/2”.

Houlihan showed her strength in the triple jump, winning the event with combined jumps of 34’7 1/2”. Wynn took fourth in the event with a total of 33’ 3/4”.

In shot put, the best finishers were sophomore Chi Chi Ndubisi with a throw of 33’11 1/2” and senior Mary Towey with a throw of 33’8”. They finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
First-year Sarah Bennett took fifth place for Oberlin in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4’8”.

The Yeowomen only entered one relay event and they picked the right one to enter. The 800m relay team of Wynn, Houlihan, Chandler and Stackhouse won the event with a time of 1:49.5.
For the men, the lone winner of the meet was senior All NCAC indoor 3000m champ David Bevacqua, who won the event with a time of 9:01.
The Yeomen also took third and fifth in the event with senior Dan Schwartz running a time of 9:23.5 and sophomore Erik Ludlow running a time of 9:24.3.

In the 200m sprint, first-years Mark Lengel and Quammie Semper took fifth and seventh respectively. Lengel ran a time of 23.87 and Semper turned in a time of 23.91.
Both sprinters were chasing Eric Biro of John Carroll University, who won the event with a time of 23.11.

Junior Andre Street, who was all-NCAC in the 400m last season, finished second in the 500m with a time of 1:08.7, just three-tenths off the winning time.

In the relays, the team of Lengel, Street, first-year Jeremy Lane and Semper took third in the 800m relay with a time of 1:35.7, followed by the team of junior Greg Wells, sophomore Steve Klosterman, and first-years Kurt Baumgardner and Michel Dedeo who took fifth with a time of 1:44.1.

Lane also placed fifth in the long jump, totaling 37’2 1/2”.
The men’s and women’s track team will compete next tonight at the Greater Cleveland Championships.
