The Oberlin women’s lacrosse team seemingly ran out of steam as they approached the end of the season. Although they made it to the NCAC tournament they lost in the first round in a 19-1 loss to Wooster to drop their record to 2-6 for the conference and 3-10 overall.
Coming off a staggering 18-5 loss to Kenyon last weekend the Yeowomen lost Tuesday to Wooster.
“Our last two games were not our strongest,” Head Coach Liz Graham said.
While Oberlin was struggling for momentum their opponents had no trouble performing. “I feel like we fizzled a little bit at the end of the season, when a couple of teams we were playing — particularly Wooster — were really peaking and going strong,” Graham said.
Wooster went on to defeat Kenyon on the road and played a decent game, losing 10-15 in the final to Denison.
On Tuesday, Wooster came out from the start in control of the pace. “Right from the beginning of the game [Wooster] came at us very hard at us on offense. In a lot ways I think they out-hustled us.”
The first half was particularly brutal. The Yeowomen were down 14-0 at the break. Although they played a better second half it was too late by that point. Senior MarySara Salvania scored the lone goal for Oberlin.
The Yeowomen definitely struggled to compare to last year, dropping from second to sixth ranked in the conference.
Although the season came to a disappointing end, the team will hope to turn it around for next year. Unfortunately, the Yeowomen will lose five seniors for next year, among them Salvania, defender Kathryn Lanouette and goalie Alex Grindle. The returning players will have a lot of work to do next year, but this season has may offer them more positive momentum than the record would show.
“The players that we do have returning — while this wasn’t always the easiest season for them — really improved and have learned a lot that’s going to help them next year,” Graham said.
