Four final candidates for the position of dean of student life and services have been announced. The first will visit campus next week while others will follow in subsequent weeks.

The candidates are Richard Chapman, dean of students and Common Learning Agenda faculty member at Bucknell University; William Stackman, associate dean of student life and services at Oberlin College; Peter Goldsmith, dean of first-year students and adjunct associate professor of anthropology at Dartmouth College; and Deborah McNish, interim dean of student life and services at Oberlin College.

Ray English, director of libraries and chair of the search committee, said he is pleased with how the search has gone so far.

"The committee has worked very hard to build a very strong applicant pool, and we're bringing four excellent candidates for the campus interviews," English said.

Goldsmith, the first of the four candidates to visit campus, will arrive Wednesday.

The candidates' campus visits will include meetings with the search committee, resident coordinators, student life staff and directors, President Nancy Dye, other members of the senior administration and faculty.

In addition students will have an opportunity to meet the candidates in open candidate forums, as well as a meeting for leaders of student organizations. (See page 7 for related information). The times of other candidate forums will be included in future Reviews.

McNish will interview March 14 to 16, Chapman between March 17 and 19, and Stackman will interview after Spring Break, from March 28 to 30.

English said he would like to see students, faculty and staff participate in the forums. Anyone who attends an interview function will be able to offer written feedback, which the search committee will consider.

"The committee looks forward to receiving broad-based feedback from the campus community so that our recommendation to President Dye can be as informed as possible," English said.

Once the candidates visit, the search committee will recommend a candidate to Dye, who makes the final decision.

The incoming dean will replace Charlene Cole-Newkirk, who resigned in 1997. McNish has been acting dean this year.

Student organizations are also invited to send representatives to meet with Goldsmith between 4 and 5 p.m. the same day in Wilder 115.
