In their final home match of the season, the Yeowomen take on NCAC powerhouse Allegheny. Sporting an impressive 13-5 record, the women hope to beat the Gators before moving on to the upcoming conference tournament.
Elias is a college junior and co-chair of the Oberlin chess club, which hosted a tournament last weekend.
So how long have you been playing chess?
What do you mean by 'seriously'?
How did the tournament go this weekend?
I heard you had a game with a five year old. How'd that go?
So you beat her?
Elias, I was at the tournament and she was crying. You made her cry.
Do you call the piece that looks like a horse a knight or a horsey?
Did you see Searching for Bobby Fischer?
I have a tendency to bring out my queen early. I know this is dangerous, but what can I do?
What are your worst fears in chess?
Are you referring to the eight year old?

Oberlin vs. Allegheny
Saturday, 10 a.m.
IN THE LOCKERROOM WITH...Elias Sardonis
I was a kid when I started. I've only really taken the game seriously in the past couple of years.
You know, studying openings, brushing up on strategy, working on more advanced tactics.
Not bad. We had some of the top players in the country attend and there were some incredible games.
She was eight and she was actually beating me. The end game cost her badly.
You're damn right.
She wasn't really crying. She was just visibly upset. Maybe there was one or two tears but that's the way chess goes. I did crush her, though.
There is no such thing as a horsey in the game of chess.
Yes, I did. There are only so many movies about chess.
I have many friends who suffer the same problem. You just need to learn patience. What are your worst fears in chess?
Well Glenn, like yourself I too fear children and Russians. Unfortunately, the Russian child I played in the fourth round took a thorough beating. I schooled her.
You're damn right.
