Welcome to the internet home of the Oberlin College Republicans (CRs). First chartered in 1982, the organization was re-established in March 2005 after about a decade of inactivity. The mission of the CRs is to expose students to conservative and Republican political ideas by organizing lectures, debates, and other activities. In addition, the organization engages in community service and aims to promote balance and civility in political discourse at Oberlin.
David Arredondo Speaks on Immigration Reform
On the evening of Tuesday, May 1, 2007, the Oberlin CRs welcomed Mr. David Arredondo to campus for a discussion on immigration reform. David Arredondo, the son of a legal Mexican immigrant, is Director of International Student Services at Lorain County Community College (LCCC) and currently serves as Chairman of the Lorain Area Republican Party. His presentation was entitled, "An Evening with a Mexican-American: Essentials of Real Immigration Reform." Mr. Arredondo focused on the background of and current problems with America's immigration policies, and what steps should be taken to fix them. The Oberlin CRs were honored to host Mr. Arredondo on campus and we thank him for joining us.

RRPLS: John Stossel Presents Lecture on "Bashing Business"
The Oberlin CRs welcomed John Stossel (Co-Anchor of ABC's 20/20) to campus on Wednesday, April 25, 2007. Mr. Stossel presented a lecture entitled, "Bashing Business: How Capitalism Is Vilified in Newsrooms, Universities, and Government." This lecture was the Spring 2007 installment of the Ronald Reagan Political Lectureship Series, made possible by the generous support of Steven Shapiro (OC '83). Mr. Stossel's appearance was also supported by Young America's Foundation.
The lecture was free and open to the public, and Mr. Stossel signed copies of his latest book, Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel--Why Everything You Know is Wrong, after speaking. The audience, over 220 strong, filled West Lecture Hall in the Oberlin College Science Center, the largest lecture hall on campus.

The End of Affirmative Action: It May Be Sooner Than You Think
The Oberlin CRs welcomed Mr. Peter N. Kirsanow to campus on Monday, April 9, 2007. At 8:00pm in West Lecture Hall, Mr. Kirsanow presented a lecture entitled, "The End of Affirmative Action: It May Be Sooner Than You Think." The event drew a crowd of approximately 100 students, faculty, and community members.
Peter N. Kirsanow is a member of the National Labor Relations Board and of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Prior to his appointment, he was a partner with the Cleveland, Ohio law firm of Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan, and Aronoff LLP in the Labor and Employment Practice Group. Mr. Kirsanow is also a frequent contributor to National Review Online. He received his B.A. in 1976 from Cornell University and his J.D. with honors in 1979 from Cleveland State University, where he served as articles editor of the Cleveland State Law Review.

New Officers for Spring 2007
The Oberlin CRs elected new officers on Thursday, March 15 for service during the Spring 2007 semester. The new officers are President Mary Burke, Vice President Geoffrey Peterson, Treasurer Amanda Turley, and Secretary Desirae Sweet. Thanks to all who came to the meeting and participated in the elections.

Oberlin CRs Send Delegation to CPAC 2007
The Oberlin CRs sent a small delegation to attend this year's Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). CPAC is the largest event of its kind for the conservative movement. This year's conference included guests such as Vice President Dick Cheney, Senator Mitch McConnell, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, and many others. Oberlin CRs Participate in ACS Relay For Life
Oberlin College was the host of the American Cancer Society's 'Relay For Life' on February 24-25, 2007. The Oberlin CRs formed a team (of six members) and participated in the event. All proceeds went to support the American Cancer Society's research and advocacy missions; the CRs raised approximately $800. Members of the CRs received donations online before the event, walked throughout the relay, and organized an on-site fundraiser to obtain additional donations. We thank all those who supported us before, during, and after the relay.

Ex-Hippie Peter Jedick Presents Talk: "Why I Used to Be a Liberal"
On February 22, 2007, in honor of George Washington's Birthday, Cleveland based freelance writer (and author of the novel HIPPIES) Peter Jedick visited the students of Oberlin College and presented a talk entitled, "Why I Used to Be a Liberal." Mr. Jedick invited students to help him return to his liberal roots. His talk catalogued how he changed from a left wing radical in the 1960s to a right wing conservative in the 21st Century; humor was the order of the evening. After beginning his visit with the Pledge of Allegiance, Mr. Jedick spoke for a short while and then took questions for the remainder of the evening. We thank Mr. Jedick for his visit.
