In the first match on Friday, the Yeowomen
took on Ohio Wesleyan. Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead, coming out of
doubles by winning second doubles over senior Beth Krupski and first-year
Becca Buurma and third doubles over sophomores Laura Koehn and Lindsay
Butler. For Oberlin, the first doubles team of junior Sarah Jesse and
sophomore Alaina Fotiu-Wojtowicz took their match 8-2.
Oberlin then shut the match out by winning the first four singles matches
all in straight sets. The final score of the match was 5-2, as fifth
and sixth singles did not finish because the match was played until
decision. “On Friday we played the best we have ever played,” Coach
Don Hunsinger said, “Everyone on the team gave forth a tremendous effort
in both matches.”

In their second match on Friday, the Yeowomen
took on Denison University, a team they had played just a few days earlier.
Denison again took the match, winning by a final score of 5-2 in another
shortened match. Oberlin was again behind 2-1 leaving doubles, but this
time could not take the match in singles play. Scoring the lone doubles
point for the Yeowomen was the third doubles team of Koehn and Butler.
“Third doubles played really well against Denison. It was their best
match of the year,” Hunsinger said.
In singles, Krupski won third singles 6-4, 6-3 for Oberlin’s second
and final point. “Krupski beat Denison twice last week and just absolutely
destroyed her opponent on Friday,” Hunsinger said.
On Saturday, the Yeowomen took on Wittenberg University in what would
be their last match of the Championships. Oberlin fell 5-0 in the play-to-decision
match. “We were ahead in first and second doubles, but couldn’t hold
a lead to win them. I believe that if we had won first and second doubles
we could have won the match,” Hunsinger said.
Oberlin lost first and second doubles by scores of 8-6 and 8-7 (9-8).
With Wittenberg only needing two singles points to take the match, the
Lady Tigers did so by quickly taking fourth and fifth singles in straight
sets.
Oberlin was up or even in the four singles matches still being played.
In their last match of the season, the Yeowomen took on Walsh University
at home this past Tuesday. Oberlin took the match 7-2, ending their
season with a record of 13-11. “This was a good match for the women.
Last year we got beat in this match but we came out on top this year,”
Hunsinger said.
In her final match, Krupski, the lone senior on the team, won 6-1, 6-3
playing third singles.
The men’s tennis team struggled through another week with injuries to
their first singles player, first-year Jamie Frankel, and to sophomore
Jay Criscione. Frankel and possibly Criscione will play in this weekend’s
NCAC Championships hosted at Oberlin.
Last Saturday the Yeoman took on Alma (Mich.) College. The men played
tough in their matches but in the end fell 7-0. The first doubles team
of seniors Ben Fox and Mike Shelton lost a difficult match 8-4 while
second doubles of first-year Marian Bocek and sophomore Ashvin Raj fell
8-5. Sophomores Matt Fairbanks and Matt Issacs had a rough outing at
third doubles falling 8-0.
This past Tuesday, the men also took on Walsh University at home. “The
men looked a lot better,” Hunsinger said, “A couple of our guys competed
really well.”
Though they lost the match 7-0, every individual match was close, with
Oberlin coming up on the short end each time. Their record fell to 6-16
on the year.
Oberlin will get set to end their season by hosting the Conference Championships
this Friday and Saturday.
