Index of Letters Received by Oberlin College, 1822-1866
Introduction
Oberlin, College and town, was founded in 1833. This file of letters was created in the Office of the Treasurer of the school which, until 1850, was known as the Oberlin Collegiate Institute. The few letters that predate 1833 relate to the activities of John J. Shipherd, one of the founders. Among the letters received are some letters sent which were written by the men who filled the office of Treasurer during the period: Eliphalet Redington (1834-35), Levi Burnell (1835-41), Hamilton Hill (1841-64), George N. Allen (1864-65), and George Kinney (1865-66). Because the Treasurer also acted as the institution's secretary the letters deal with a wide variety of subjects. Some of these are the founding and organization of the school, efforts by agents to raise and collect funds to keep it operating, inquiries from and about students and would-be students and other subjects normal to the operation of the office. Topics of wider interest include opposition to the institution of slavery and aid for Negroes, temperance work and religious and educational activities.
In the index the name of the correspondent is followed, whenever possible, by the name of the community or state where the letter was written. If one person wrote several letters the location (or locations) given means simply that at least one or more of his letters were written there.
These letters have been microfilmed. To aid the microfilm user the frame number where each letter begins appears in the index in parentheses after the date of the letter. The proper roll number for each letter may be determined from the following list:
Roll 1:1822-Aug. 1834 Roll 2: Sept. 1834-Feb. 1836 Roll 3: March 1836-Feb. 1837 Roll 4: March 1837-Jan. 1838 Roll 5: Feb. 1838-Jan. 1839 |

When it has been noted that a letter was filmed out of order both the roll number and the frame number have been included in the index.
This letter file, identified as RG 7/1/5, is among the holdings of the Oberlin College Archives, Oberlin Ohio.
This index was created in 1973.
