Introduction

This file of letters was received by the Office of the Treasurer of Oberlin College (Oberlin Collegiate Institute before 1850). Among the letters received are some letters sent which were written by the men who occupied the Office of Treasurer during the period: George Kinney (1865-1875), James B.T. Marsh (1875-1887), Giles W. Shurtleff (1887-1893), and James R. Severance (1893-1916). Because the Treasurer also acted as the institution's secretary, up to 1899, the letters deal with a wide variety of subjects. Some of these documents relate to efforts by College agents to raise and collect funds to keep it operating and to develop the physical plant of the campus. Others constitute inquiries from and about students and other topics normal to the operations of the office. The correspondence of the Treasurer became more singularly financial in character and scope when George Morris Jones was named secretary to Oberlin College in 1899.

The Index contains approximately 2,675 names. In the index the name of the correspondent is followed, whenever possible, by the name of the town/city or state where the letter was written. If one person (correspondent) wrote several letters the location (or locations) listed means simply that at least one or more of his letters were written from this address. Also noted is the date span and the number of letters written over a period of time.

The letters covering the time frame of 1867-1907 have not been microfilmed, unlike the letters, dated 1822-1866, in the Office of the Treasurer. It is hoped that at some future point in time that the letters will be reproduced on this medium.
