On
the Air with WCLV
If you've been in the Cleveland area recently and wondered why
the Conservatory is getting so much radio coverage, there is a
good reason. A new relationship was formed in the summer of 2001
between the Conservatory and WCLV-FM, Cleveland's classical music
station. The centerpiece of this new association: a series of
live broadcasts from Oberlin's
concert halls featuring performances
by the Con-servatory's faculty members and student ensembles,
reaching audiences wherever they may be through simulcasting on
the station's web site.
The folks at WCLV flipped the switch on this new venture with
broadcasts from Finney Chapel of the C.B. Fisk Opus 116 organ
inaugural concerts on September 28 and 29, 2001. Additional fall
programs included the St. Petersburg String Quartet in recital
with Professor of Pianoforte Peter Takacs and a performance by
the Oberlin Orchestra under Paul Polivnick of Shostakovich's
11th Symphony and Beethoven's Violin Concerto, with Conservatory
Concerto Competition winner Yang Xu as soloist.
Broadcasts for 2002 include a presentation of the complete solo
violin sonatas of J.S. Bach in January by Professor of Violin
Gregory Fulkerson.
The opportunity to hear Oberlin from afar has been welcomed. The
elated parents of percussion performance major Timothy McKay '03
following the December broadcast of the Oberlin Orchestra sent
an e-mail message to WCLV President Robert Conrad: "Thank
you for your live broadcast, and for your support of online audio.
As parents of an Oberlin Orchestra member, we enjoyed listening
to our son play. Since we live in Virginia, this was a wonderful
opportunity."
In October, the Conservatory began "CD of the Week,"
a program sampling recently released CDs of Oberlin faculty members,
alumni, and students. A chosen CD is played and discussed daily
by the WCLV host; a total of 30 are to be featured. Also in production
at Oberlin, "Musical Wonders," a 13-week series exploring
issues that expose the common ground between professional music
and everyday life, with radio personality Paula Gordon '68 (www.paulagordon.com)
as producer and host.
WCLV is also a media sponsor of the Conservatory's Artist Recital
Series, now in its 123rd year.
