Pianist Richard Goode opened the 123rd season of Oberlin's distinguished Artist Recital Series (ARS) in October 2001 with a program of works by Beethoven, Debussy, Mozart, and Schubert, and an encore by Bach. (Cleveland) Plain Dealer Music Critic Wilma Salisbury called his recital "superb . . . Goode held the near-capacity crowd enraptured."

Goode also spent four days on campus under the aegis of the Danenberg Artist Residency Program. In a master class, he observed Artist Diploma student Giacomo Battarino in a work by Brahms; David Hughes '02, who offered Beethoven; and Brahms again, presented by violinists Masha Bessmeltseva '02 and Eftychia Talakoudi '03, violist Keith Lawrence '03, cellist Jamila Watkins '03, and pianist Youngha Guk '02.

Other master classes in 2001 featured pianist Lev Natochenny; violinist James Buswell; Michael Sachs (Principal Trumpet of The Cleveland Orchestra); pianist Sergei Schepkin; members of the the American Brass Quintet; jazz and classical clarinetist Eddie Daniels; bassoonist Carlos Columbo; members of the New Arts Trio; members of eighth blackbird; violinist Rachel Barton; and oboist Louis Rosenblack.The fall ARS season also included performances by the American Brass Quintet and The Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Ivan Fischer. Cellist Janos Starker, the Tokyo String Quartet, soprano Barbara Bonney, and Apollo's Fire are on the spring program.
