Grape Article Was Misleading

To the Editor:

This letter is in response to The Grape’s Feb. 15 article entitled “Search and Seizure Policy May Be Revised.” As chair of the President’s Task Force on Rules and Regulations, I feel the need to clarify a few points and to discuss our process and intentions.

During the fall of 1997, President Dye appointed a task force to create a more effective and responsive student judicial system. After three years of research and open discussions, a draft was presented to Student Senate, Student Life Committee and the campus community before receiving final approval from the General Faculty last Spring.
The task force was also charged with reviewing student life policies to ensure that the changing aspects of our communities are reflected. This process will begin shortly by reviewing the policy regarding room searches (Rules and Regs, page 40). Student members proposed that we begin with this policy, as it has been a longstanding source of confusion.

It is important to note that there is no proposal at this time. We are beginning a dialogue that will continue through next year and involve a number of open meetings providing opportunities for community input. In reviewing this policy, it is important for us to focus on preserving the rights of students while maintaining a safe and secure living environment.

It is also critical that our procedures are in accordance with state and federal laws — both those that require respect for the privacy of individuals and those that are intended to protect public safety.

I expect that many of you will be interested in our discussions and any future developments. I invite you to attend our meetings and to contact me or any member of our task force throughout our process. I welcome your suggestions and ideas.
