The Rich Pay More, So They Should Get More Back

To the Editor:

In an attempt to purchase his seven-year-old daughter a ring, a middle-income father inserted a quarter into the bubble gum machine at the local shopping mall. The defective bubble gum machine produced nothing. Seeking a refund, he went to the customer service desk. He stood in line behind a wealthy businessman, who also returned a ring: a huge, three-karat diamond ring. He couldn’t help but notice the whopping $40,000 refund check. If the wealthy businessman received a big check, it’s only fair that the middle-income father receive a big $40,000 check, too. Unfortunately, the middle-income father’s refund only totaled exactly what he paid, a meager 25 cents.
Outrageous! I’m with Senator Tom Daschle. This isn’t fair. Where’s his $40,000? Not to mention his Lexus.
A pretty asinine illustration, wouldn’t you say? Not according to Senator Daschle.
Daschle presented this same illustration using a Lexus and a muffler, charging President Bush’s tax cut plan as unfair because the rich receive a tax cut equivalent to a Lexus while the not-so-rich receive a tax cut equivalent to a muffler.
Question: If the tax cut is equally proportionate to what Americans actually paid, what’s the problem, Senator?
I’m a father and husband of a middle-income, muffler-size-tax-cut, family. Yet, if the rich paid Uncle Sam a (greater than) Lexus-size tax bill, are they not worthy of a Lexus-size tax cut? Like the $40,000 refund for the three-karat diamond, they (more than) paid for it, right? If Daschle thinks the Lexus-size tax cut is so exorbitant, it just goes to show ya, the rich paid more than their “fair share” in taxes, after all.

The nice thing about the rich receiving a Lexus-size tax cut is the comfort in knowing I never paid a Lexus-size tax bill. Sure, a Lexus-size tax cut would be nice, but honestly, my tax bill didn’t come close to a Lexus. Daschle might try offering the Lexus-size tax cut to those who at least paid for it.
Daschle assumes that we, middle-income Americans, are obsessed with the Jones’ tax cut, across the street. His covet-thy-neighbor’s-Lexus-size-tax-cut stunt incites envy among unwary Americans while advancing his political agenda. Social class should be the last thing that divides our blessed country. My friends stem from all social classes. I’ll take ’em, regardless of their tax cut.
