Boycott Killian’s, Show Principles

To the Editor:

On a recent visit to the ’Sco I was understandably distressed to find that the ’Sco now serves Killian’s Irish Red beer. For those who do not already know, Killian’s is a product of Coors Brewing Corporation.
A little additional information about Coors: they have a corporate track record that is comparable to, if not worse than, some of the most vicious corporations in the United States. In their 1999 pamphlet NARAL declared them the most vicious corporation in America. They consistently donate large amounts to right wing think tanks, anti-gay organizations (including the contingent that shot down the equal rights amendment to the Colorado State Constitution), anti-choice organizations, anti-union organizations and other right-wing charities.
I asked Shirley Atkins, the ’Sco manager, why Killian’s was added to the ’Sco menu. She replied that students requested that she bring it in.
What I ask now is that the students organize a boycott on all Coors products, both inside and outside the ’Sco doors. Note, I am not suggesting a protest or boycott of the ’Sco or any 1oca1 businesses that serve Coors. The ’Sco serves Coors products because the students buy them. I don’t put blame on the ’Sco for serving Killian’s. I ask that anyone who has money and does not want to the kinds of charities and organizations that Coors supports with their profits not buy Coors products.
As an 80s DJ, I have come to know and love the staff at the ’Sco. If people are to boycott Killian’s at the ’Sco, there is no reason to boycott the ’Sco or treat the staff in any manner aside from the respect and kindness they deserve.
Remember, drinking responsibly not only means refraining from driving under the influence or trying not to vomit in public. Drinking responsibly also means being a responsible consumer, doing your research and knowing where your money is going.
