World is Male Space

To the Editor:

As a resident of Baldwin, the Women’s Collective, I was quite shocked to read in last week’s Review an editorial that called for a “male safe space.” Similarly, in the section of student comments there were many statements for a “balance” needed on this campus between women-only space and male-only space. I think that it is irresponsible for the editors of the Review to be so blatantly sexist.

By calling for a “male safe space” on campus you are implying that men are inherently oppressed on this campus and in this world. That very thought sickens me because of its absurdity and its mockery of the oppression women face. Men as a group are the people who hold power in this unbalanced world.

To call for a “balance,” to call for a “male safe space” is a slap to the face of every woman, every feminist and every human being. I take personal offense when it is implied that since I live in an all women’s residence hall that functions as a safe space, a man deserves the exact same safe space I do. What do you think this safe space is for in Baldwin? Do you think it is for the hell of it? No, it is because there is an imbalance; the whole world is a male space.
