Oberlin Conservatory of Music Hosts From the Top with Special Guest Bobby McFerrin January 28. (December 9, 2002)
DECEMBER 16, 2002--From the Top, the hit public radio program that NBC’s Today Show calls "classy reality programming," comes to Northeast Ohio Tuesday, January 28, at 8:00 p.m. to record a show before a live audience in Finney Chapel at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College. The program, which is being recorded for broadcast later this year, will feature special guest Bobby McFerrin joined by talented young musicians from around the country. Hosted by internationally renowned pianist Christopher O'Riley, From the Top can be heard every Sunday at 6:00 p.m. on WCLV-FM 104.9 FM, Cleveland's classical music station, with encore performances Saturdays at 9:00 p.m. The program is carried on more than 240 radio stations coast-to-coast. Oberlin College Santas Buy Books for Local Elementary School Children. (December 9, 2002)
DECEMBER 09, 2002--Two groups at Oberlin College are working to make the holiday season brighter for beginning readers as well as local families in need.

Oberlin College's Songs for the Journey: A festival of Hymns to be Broadcast on Thanksgiving Day. (November 27, 2002)
NOVEMBER 22, 2002--Songs for the Journey: A Festival of Hymns, recorded in concert at Oberlin College’s Finney Chapel, will be broadcast Thanksgiving Day on WCLV-FM and Classic Pops 1420 AM. The one-hour special features more than 1,000 voices and 50 northeast Ohio church and community choirs as well as the choral ensembles of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. The director is John Ferguson, professor of organ and cantor to the student congregation at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Dr. Ferguson, who received his undergraduate degree from the Oberlin Conservatory, also performs on the Kay Africa Memorial organ, built and designed by C.B. Fisk, in Finney Chapel.

Sitar Virtuoso Kartik Seshandri to Perform at Oberlin College November 23. (November 14, 2002)
Sitar virtuoso Kartik Seshadri will perform at Oberlin College's Finney Chapel (90 North Professor Street) Saturday, November 23, at 8:00 p.m. He will be accompanied by Bikram Ghosh on tabla.

Acclaimed Violinist Hilary Hahn to Perform at Oberlin November 22 as Part of the 2002-2003 Artist Recital Series. (November 14, 2002)
NOVEMBER 14, 2002--The Artist Recital Series at Oberlin College presents the acclaimed young American violinist Hilary Hahn in concert Friday, November 22, at 8:00 p.m. in Finney Chapel. Pianist Natalie Zhu will join Hahn in a program featuring works by Ernest Bloch, Franz Schubert, and Claude Debussy; Hahn will also perform J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 3 in E Major for solo violin, BWV 1006. Biographies of both Hahn and Zhu are available online.

Four Oberlin Conservatory Students Win Concerto Competition. (November 14, 2002)
NOVEMBER 14, 2002--Four seniors at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College have won the Conservatory’s 2002 Concerto Competition, held in Finney Chapel October 12. The four, selected from among 16 finalists, have secured spots as soloists with the Oberlin Orchestra and Oberlin Chamber Orchestra during the 2002-03 concert season. All concerts will take place in Finney Chapel and will be conducted by Steven Smith, associate professor of conducting and music director of the Oberlin Orchestras. Two of the concerts are scheduled for live broadcast on WCLV-104.9 FM, Cleveland’s classical music radio station. A complete schedule of these performances is available online.

The Flying Karamazov Brothers Play Catch! at Oberlin College. (November 6, 2002)
NOVEMBER 6, 2002--The Flying Karamazov Brothers--masters of juggling and cheap theatric--are proud to present their new show, Catch!, in Oberlin College's Finney Chapel (90 North Professor Street) Friday, November 15, at 8:00 p.m. The show is a celebration of their many happy and successful invasions of the Great White Way and nearby beach-heads, with a selection of old favorites and highlights from the performances that rocked Broadway and rolled down 42nd street.

Two Evenings of Music will Celebrate Langston Hughes' Centennial. (November 6, 2002)
NOVEMBER 6, 2002--When poet Langston Hughes wrote his classic "Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz," he specified that certain parts of the text be set to or accompanied by music. When Oberlin composer Wendell Logan first encountered the poem, he knew he would take Hughes up on the idea.

Erin McKeown to Perform at Oberlin College. (October 28, 2002)
OCTOBER 28, 2002--Contemporary folk-pop artist Erin McKeown will perform at Oberlin College's Finney Chapel (90 North Professor Street) Saturday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m. Quickly making a name for herself as one of the hottest up-and-coming singer-songwriters, McKeown's music has been characterized as a hybrid of folk, blues, and jazz with a modern sound.

Award-Winning Contemporary Music Ensemble in Concert with Pianist Ursula Oppens. (October 22, 2002)
OCTOBER 22, 2002--The Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME), under the direction of Associate Professor of Wind Conducting Timothy Weiss, will perform György Ligeti’s Concerto for Piano with the distinguished pianist Ursula Oppens Sunday, November 10, at 8:00 p.m. in Finney Chapel. Also on the program are Ligeti’s Ramifications (for 12 solo strings, 1968-69) and William Russell’s Chicago Sketches, featuring the Oberlin Percussion Group, led by Professor of Percussion Michael Rosen.

OCEAn 2002 New Music Festival Makes Waves at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in November. (October 8, 2002)
OCTOBER 8, 2002--OCEAn, Ohio Community of Electro-Acoustic n (where n is a variable), will make waves once again with its biennial festival of new music at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and at Oberlin’s Cleveland performing arts venue, the Here Here Gallery. Nearly 40 composers from Ohio will converge on Oberlin and Cleveland Friday, November 15, and Saturday, November 16, in a sonic extravaganza of contemporary electronic music that is free and open to the public. The OCEAn events at Oberlin venues will be broadcast live on WOBC, 91.5-FM and simulcast online.

Pages from the Past: An Exhibition of Medieval and Renaissance Books. (October 4, 2002)
OCTOBER 4, 2002--The Oberlin College Library will host an exhibition of medieval and renaissance illuminated books drawn from the collections of Oberlin College and John M. Lawrence of Wooster, Ohio, who generously lent the majority of items in the exhibition. "Pages from the Past" will run October 7 through November 8.

Art and the Environment: Employing Art to Enhance the Message of Ecological Design. (September 24, 2002)
SEPTEMBER 24, 2002--Oberlin College's Department of Art and Program for Environmental Studies have joined forces with the Ohio Arts Council and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to determine how environmental art can be used to enhance the message of ecological design.

Professor Romila Thapar, Historian of Ancient India and Ardent Advocate of Secularism, to Speak at Oberlin College. (September 20, 2002)
SEPTEMBER 20, 2002--Professor Romila Thapar, Emeritus Professor of History at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, will deliver the Oberlin Shansi Distinguished Lecture for the 2002-2003 academic year. Her lecture, "The Writing of History and Contemporary Politics in India," will be at noon Monday, September 30, in Craig Lecture Hall, Science Center, Oberlin College.

Former Clinton Press Secretary to Speak at Oberlin College. (September 18, 2002)
SEPTEMBER 18, 2002-- Mike McCurry, President Clinton's former press secretary, will speak at Oberlin College October 3, 2002, as part of the Cole Distinguished Lecture Series in American Politics. McCurry's presentation, entitled "A View from the Podium," will begin at noon in the science center's West Lecture Hall.

Coalition Launches Housing Improvement Partnership. (September 17, 2002)
SEPTEMBER 17, 2002--Oberlin College, the City of Oberlin, Zion Community Development Corporation, New Sunrise Properties and Oberlin Community Services have joined forces to create an action plan to address housing issues in the City of Oberlin. The process will begin this fall with a housing condition study, a survey of residents, and community forums facilitated by Enterprise Foundation, a Baltimore-based firm that has worked with communities throughout the country to develop systematic approaches to housing concerns. "The result of this process will be a plan created by the Oberlin community that identifies specific steps to achieve the desired results," said Leslie Strnisha, acting director of the Cleveland offices of the Enterprise Foundation.

Washington Post Book World Senior Editor Michael Dirda to Speak at Oberlin College. (September 17, 2002)
SEPTEMBER 17, 2002--Lorain, Ohio native and Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Dirda will be the featured speaker at Oberlin College's Friends of the Library annual dinner Saturday, September 28. Dirda's talk, "Looking for a Good Time: Reading, Libraries, and the world of Books," will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the Root Room of Carnegie Building (52 West Lorain Street). His talk is free and open to the public.

Hymn Festival "Songs for the Journey" Takes Place at Oberlin's Finney Chapel September 29. (September 12, 2002)
SEPTEMBER 12, 2002--"Songs for the Journey," a hymn festival conceived and conducted by organist and choral director John Ferguson, a 1963 graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College and a professor at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, will take place at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel on Sunday, September 29, at 4:00 p.m. Finney Chapel is located at the intersection of Lorain (Route 511) and Professor streets, across from Tappan Square.

Poet Bruce Weigl '73 Reads from His Works September 24. (September 12, 2002)
SEPTEMBER 12, 2002--Acclaimed poet Bruce Weigl will read from his works at Oberlin College Tuesday, September 24, at 4:45 p.m. in King 106. A book-signing will follow the reading.
